I live in Corpus Christi, TX so Monterrey seemed like a short run from home. Myself and Duayne got ready and was off 7/03 and planned to return 7/06. We were worried about the 150 miles of open Mexican road that was full of the unknown and unsafe.
We left home unevently and ran down TX281 the new corridor, it was uneventful. We crossed the border in Reynosa, MX and skirted the city getting on highway 40 MX. We ran all the way to Monterrey on the toll side of the highway costing about $25 each, each way. Well worth the price to run 70 with no interuptions.
The weather was good for riding, overcast with sprinkles every so often. The weather was like this the entire trip but it never got hot and no blazing sun. This means a lot to a person from S TX.
Duayne and I had a great time in the city the first day walking through museums and cultural things about Mexico but the second day was not the same. We downloaded maps and laid out the path to the Harley Dealer for a pit stop.
Good thing we had planned that in the run for the day because as we approached the bikes, I had a flat on the rear... We nursed the bike to the gas station and filled enough to make the dealer.
We arrived at the Harley Dealer in Monterrey and they did me well! Yhey repaired my tire and fixed my nuetral safety light and adjusted my front brakes. All they charged me for was the tire, the rest was free. I have to say that the prices of shirts was very high but the price of bikes seems the same as here in the states.
After we were mechanically ready we hit the road and cruised south to Saltillo, Mx. A very nice ride across the southern mountains and through a couple of passes. It was desert beautiful and worth the ride. Unfortunately we were stopped by the rain. We returned to Monterrey and beat the real downpour...
On the return trip we rode through rain for about the first 60 miles and then it became clear sailing all the way home.
I would not use TX Highway 281 in the future. It is heavily travelled and many speed traps along the way. Highway 77 through Harlingen is a much better bet for travelling to the border of Mexico..
